Tips for a better match

• Type only what you’re sure of. Two clear letters beat a whole guessed word. The Finder accepts partial words.
• Worn or faint mark? Tilt the piece under a single light so impressed letters cast shadows, or rub a soft pencil over thin paper laid on the mark.
• No words at all? Pick a symbol and a shape. Many makers used a picture mark alone.
• Check the date clues too. A country name, “Made in”, a © or a registration number can narrow the date even before you find the maker.
